Review

Author Judy Gauthier guides readers through cutting, sorting, and organizing scraps into 12 colorful rainbow quilts. Using simple shapes, these patterns are perfect for quilters looking to use their odd-shape scraps and reduce their stash size. (American Patchwork & Quilting, June 2017)Bright and cheerful ways to use up your scraps to make beautiful quilts. 12 projects from easy squares make sensational quilts. Contents include using scraps; organize your scraps, fabrics, half-square triangles, notes and lovable projects. Sometimes scrap quilts can look like fabrics are fighting one another, but with Judy's eye for colour and good design sense, her quilts are harmonious. Find colourful ways to use up all your scraps, no matter what odd shape. May your scrap bag be forever empty. Recommended. (yarnsandfabrics.co.uk, 4/15/2017)If you're a scrapaholic and looking for a challenge, this book might interest you, especially if you are an experienced patchworker, as only a few of the patterns are at beginner level. Not only are the projects cheerful and lovely, but the author spends time explaining how to save and tame all those wonderful leftovers. She introduces tools that will help you cut to the correct sizes and explains how to step beyond the random and use background fabrics to balance a design full of many different pieces. The useful information given can also be applied to non-scrappy quilts as well, such as value and colour, how to select colour combinations and where to find inspiration. (Down Under Quilts, 180)

Have you ever put together the pieces of a tricky block with blind faith, trusting it will work out? But your trust turns to doubt when a steps involves turning the thing inside out or folding and pressing at odd places? And somehow, like the magic of origami, an orderly and surprising block presents itself. And you remember why you fell in love with quilting’You might recapture that feeling often with Rainbow Quilts For Scrap Lovers by Judy Gauthier. The fun begins with “The Windows in my Baby’s Room” (52.5”x52.5”), which imparts curves via the “Cathedral Window” block. My favorite quilt is “Aromatic Rings” (75.5”x75.5”.) At first I flipped on past it, thinking oh, no, I don’t do those hexagon things and certainly not an appliqued ring version like THAT. Then I read her instructions. Genius. So much fun to construct, even if you don’t like hexies or applique.10 more surprising designs follow. I won’t spoil them except to say about half of the quilts can be quilted easily on your domestic machine. But the other half top out at 80.5”x80.5” and 73.5”x85.5”. A bit too chunky for my short arm, but you can size some of these down. There is only 1 quilt that requires Y-seams. It is so pretty you will want to master this technique so you will never live in fear of them again.Color is everywhere. Despite all that scrappiness, Gauthier provides advice and examples on how to control the potential chaos or muddying that can occur. The photos show nice quilting lines. There’s a 14-page intro, and each quilt project has about 5 pages of instructions. You might think that’s an awful lot of text, but not a word is wasted on these unusual beauties.Any special supplies or rulers to buy?A few quilts require a yard each of woven fusible web. Another could use a single sheet of high quality thick template plastic. Another needs a ruler with 1/16th-inch markings on it (something you rarely see) OR a rotary ruler with a 60-degree line. There IS a soft sell for 2 of the author’s products: fast-2-cut Simple Square Templates and her Tear-Perfect Maker Tape. But they are not required. You can just use your rotary cutter to cut squares the size you need.

I found this book informative, helpful, different and very useful. There are patterns but not the same one we see all the time, you won't like them all, but the certainly provide food for thought in the making of a scrap quilt. There are lot of ideas the challenge yet make sense. I really like this book and actually read it all, not just flicked through the patterns as I inevitable do. This book does not give the authors life story, or what motivated her to quilt or gives a long lists of people she thanks.

#Editing my prior review. The Owl pattern has an error in cutting, so one of the rows was too short. I am not inspired by the other projects. Donated the book. # Better than expected. Fun looking, inspirational patterns. And, not to argue with another reviewer, but there is just the right amount of information about organizing scraps (not too much information). The patterns are modern but not too modern.

The cover is the best part of the book. I think some of her suggestions such as storing like color of fabrics in the same basket re a no brainers. If I had seen this in a hands on book store I probably would not have purchased it.

Working on a project from this book. Simple techniques and doesn’t require a lot of space to construct. Simple shapes too. Love the colors. Clear instructions and good pictures. Probably not for experienced quilters, but inspirational for a modern quilt look.

I found several quilts that I plan to make from this book. The instructions are easy and love the colors.

This book is loaded with unique patterns that I haven't found anywhere else. The instructions are easy to follow and the photos are beautifully inspirational.

Easy to follow patterns
