I highlighted and bookmarked a number of helpful things in this book, but it didn’t quite match my expectations, and I would estimate that only around half of the book was helpful for me. The problem here (and perhaps I just overlooked it in the description) is that this book is actually about interviewing users in their particular physical context. It’s all about making observations based on how someone interacts with their environment or a product, and while that’s interesting, it didn’t match my expectations or needs. The guidance related to question format, remaining silent, the roles of secondary and tertiary interviewers, and other more generic instruction was great, but a LOT of this book is about how to conduct yourself and make good observations in-person.
Learning to ask questions, and learning to really listen to people and hear what’s important to them is such a crucial skill for designers, researchers, and product managers today. Yes, it’s especially important for design research, but also in other scenarios—talking to stakeholders, discussions with clients, arguments with one’s significant other, you name it.Learning how to listen—and to truly hear the intent behind what is said—is a critical skill that the best designers excel at. This is not a gift you either have or you don’t, it’s a competency you can develop with the very thorough guidance in this book. It covers the mechanics of a good interview, how to get the information you need without biasing the whole thing, and all the soft skills necessary to execute research. This combo of hard and soft skills gives newbies the confidence in their skills to actually go out and TALK to people, instead of sandbagging and avoiding the whole thing. I’ve recommended it to all my students, and recommend this book to anyone looking to ask better questions and have more informative conversations.
I'm an extrovert, so I thought that interviews would be a piece of cake.In fact, interviews are one of my weaknesses: I talk too much and listen too little. This book helped me remember that the interview is not about the conversation, it's about understanding the people who will use the products I design and the problems they encounter with it.Also—and how many tech industry leaders can make this claim—Steve Portigal is followed by an Emergency Plum.
The definitive book for aspiring UX researchers. Approachable, with depth and understanding. Few writers share their process as efficiently, directly and memorably as what I found in this book. If more writers on process and technique could write like this readers would get far more value. Steve understands his craft so expertly, he is able share it with eloquence. Get it on Kindle.
A stand-out book. The book certainly offers expert advise on how to think about, prepare and conduct interviews that will lead to most useful insights. But what makes this book unique is Steve's gift to discuss the exceptions while outlining the norms. Not everyone confronts such outliers let alone resolves it. For example, he talks about how to not offend by refusing hospitality in a customer's premise. He expands beautifully that while it is a professional pursuit for the researcher it feels like a social call for the customer. It is important to empathize with that for the customer to feel at ease. Certainly makes you wiser whatever be your expertise in user research. A worthy read and re-read!
Steve Portigal does an incredible job of balancing the specific and general to create one of the most useful books I have ever read. The real-world “war stories†help clarify the points made in the book, while the insights drawn from those stories are applicable to anyone doing this type of work.A lot of things I’ve read will point to the importance of research and even give an overview of certain techniques, but they don’t go in-depth on how to really do it. I’ll often finish a book and be excited by the concepts, but leave without anything concrete that I can apply directly to my work. This book is the first I’ve found with a comprehensive approach that covers every detail of conducting an interview. I was able to take what I’d learned and use it in my next trip out into the field. Even though many of the concepts have started to become habit now, referring to my notes is now a standard part of my prep work for each new trip. It keeps everything fresh and also reminds me to try new things.I can understand other reviewers’ desires for more detail on synthesizing the research data and making it valuable/valued within the organization. This is definitely the area where I need the most help at this point. However, I found the included information on this topic to be a helpful start, and I agree that this can (and should) be a book all on its own. I also appreciate the laser focus that Interviewing Users has on, well, interviewing users. Steve Portigal sticks to the point and is delightfully thorough without coming close to being long-winded.I’ve encouraged everyone on my team to read this book. If you are trying to become more effective in doing field research, I highly recommend that you also read this book (and more than once). Even if you’ve been conducting interviews for a while, you’ll find a lot of value here.
The text provides a solid overview and coaching on performing interviews for research. The author is light on specific methods or approaches, but a library of tactics and principles is provided, encouraging the reader to experiment and practice. While not a systematic study, the positive tone is welcoming for a beginner and correctly identifies early pitfalls and how to overcome them.
