I purchased two copies of the publication, one for home and one for office use. I have resently used it to successfully analyze a problem that had stomped others who have more experience with IBM DB2 than myself. It is a reference book and has excellent sections to read and understand as your expertise increases. The DB2 Catalog tables have been removed from this edition, but they can be found on the IBM website simply by typing the table name in a browser search engine. This allows more room for information that is not so easily found on the internet. It is worth the money to purchase and time to read this publication. There was a staff reduction where I work. I was not one of the techincal people let go. I think that says it all.
I've been programming for just 2 years and found this book a great tool in working with DB2 SQL and DB2/Cobol programs. When I take this book to work, its borrowed so often I sometimes dont see it for days. I would recommend it to any programmer, new and experienced. Its coverage of SQL and DB2 techniques are outstanding.
This may be considered the Bible of DB2 books but it is lacking a whole Testament! If, like me, you are looking for info on dynamic and extended dynamic SQL to avoid having to read IBM manuals, you've come to the wrong place as this book says words to the effect of "If you want info on dynamic SQL, read the IBM manual" and leaves it at that. You would do better to hunt around the IBM online library and grab the manuals from there - they are actually pretty good, too.
I bought several of these for students attending an online DB2 class I was delivering.
What can I say? Craig's book is THE book on DB2. Covers DB2, particularly z/OS DB2, from A to Z.
I updated my library with the new edition of this Book. As in the older versions, it will be a valuable resource used daily. Thanks!
Nice and conceptual
The book was published in 1997 and it shows its age. DB2 have matured from a mainframe database to a client-server RDBMS from 1997. For instance, I was looking for stored procedure programming with Java. Of course, there is nothing about Java in this book.
