As a beginner with watercolors, I am always looking for tips and inspiration. This book has both. It provide guidance in a artistic and beautiful way. Most of the tips/lessons are covered on 2 pages and are accompanied with relevant pictures. The book starts with discussing the watercolor medium and the history of various pigments. Then there is mini lessons on different techniques - Wet on wet, glazes, washes, shadows, etc. Felix also dives into color theory as it relates to watercolor and I absolutely loved this section. It was practical and just what i needed. The author goes onto stressing the importance of developing your own style and allowing that style to evolve. He finishes the book with a section on Tools, practical advice on painting on the go, and more tips.I loved that he touched on watercolor pencils and liquid watercolors. There has been very little mentioned of these in other books and I'm glad Felix provided his opinion and experience with them. Also, he encourages readers to determine color harmonies that are visually pleasing that can be used later on. For me, determining the "right" color can be so difficult. But if I had a few pages in my watercolor book with pre-determined harmonious and interesting colors? I think it would allow more spontaneity in my urban sketching trips.Overall, I loved that Felix was very down-to-earth in his approach and encouraged the average beginner to just start. Every sketch is going to be a building block for the next sketch. Do I think this book is the end-all, be-all for you? Possibly. If you follow a lot of urban sketchers, you may not need much. Personally, I will still pick up a few other books on urban sketching/painting because I love to read what others have to say about their process. But I will say that this book by Felix has set a high bar for all the rest and it will have a permanent home on my shelf and work space.Up until this point I have been terrified to just draw and paint freely. Thanks to this book, I was able to lose the pressure of creating a "good" painting and just getting started. I credit that to this book.
The original edition for this book is actually in German and it's called Wasserfarbe für Gestalter. That was published in 2011 and is one of my favourite books on watercolour and sketching. And I can't read German. The author is Felix Scheinberger from Germany and has published other books as well. I'm so glad that the English edition for this is finally available. It's really well translated. There are two publisher for this book as I know, namely Watson-Guptill which seems to be distributing for the western market and Page One Publishing for Asia. They have slightly different cover art. The subtitle is also a bit different, one is "storytelling in color" and the other is "dreaming in color".This is a paperback edition compared to the hardcover German edition. It's still 156 pages and the layout is the same. I prefer the hardcover format because you can open both pages flat, and there are quite a few drawings printed across the gutter. That's my only complaint about the paperback format. The book features tips on using watercolour for sketching. The translation as I mentioned is fantastic. It's light hearted and conversational. It's a breeze to read through and the contents covers practical tips on using watercolours and colours. You'll read about the different hues, techniques, colour schemes, symbolism, mixing, materials, and more. You can tell the author is very knowledgeable about the subject, and would occasionally include stories on the history of colours as they were used centuries ago.One reason why I like the book so much is because of the wonderful sketches. I really love the free and loose style, vibrant and energetic colours. I feel a sense childlike wonder coming from the watercolour sketches. I'll still keep my German edition just so that I can admire the drawings easier with the book flat.Even though the title has the word 'Urban' in it, nothing in the book is specific about using watercolours in the urban setting. Hence the 4 out of 5 stars rating. With the tips, you can use them in any setting. I feel that the title is trying to ride on the wave of current popularity that comes from location or urban sketching. This book is different from those urban sketching books. This covers more on watercolour techniques which is more useful as it builds on your drawing foundation, in this case on using colours. This as one of my 2014 favourite art books.Highly recommended to those who love colours, watercolour, sketching and art.(See more pictures on my blog. This book is marvelous. I was looking for something on how to approach drawing cityscapes (Marc Taro Holmes' Urban Sketcher is a bit more pragmatic on that), but I find myself reading and rereading this one.Scheinberger has an amazing style, and I've gotten a lot out of studying his sketches over and over again. He works in a very loose, gestural style most of the time, so rather than getting precise "architectural" looking drawings, he produces something much more personal. The way he then adds color is intriguing and also very free. It's not truly a how-to, and a lot of the watercolor technical advice he does give can be found in other places, but the in-depth look at his work and also at the way he thinks about art are tremendous. This is one of the very small handful of books on sketching that I will hang on to. (Mark Taro Holmes' book is another, as are the Bert Dodson books _Keys to Drawing_ and _Keys to Drawing with Imagination_.)By the way, this book works fine in the Kindle format. I read it on my Voyage, then often look at the images on my phone to get the effect of the color.
