From Publishers Weekly
In this gossipy, spiteful memoir, champion Supercross motorcycle racer McGrath wastes no opportunity to settle scores and gloat over vanquished enemies. Targets include his former Yamaha sponsors ("how quickly people can turn their back on you"), Supercross rivals Damon Bradshaw ("failed to win a single pro championship") and Jeff Emig ("always felt he was above everyone else") and "spoiled diva" actress Alyssa Milano ("she was a little bit out of shape and her butt was kind of big.") The nursing of resentments gives some energy and focus to an otherwise slack, anecdotal recounting of McGrath's aimless off-track existence as it meanders from his party-hearty bachelorhood, to his tense but dull courtship of his wife, to the furnishing of his home ("I rubbed my knees on each individual carpet sample page to simulate lying on the floor watching TV.") McGrath's account of his on-track career is preoccupied with the minutiae of sponsorship and endorsement deals and a catalogue of his record-setting accomplishments, but it occasionally includes revealing material on racing strategy and the exploitation of riders by promoters. Advice sidebars on topics like motorcycle maintenance ("modestly apply oil to filter, then gently massage in") and career-building ("you need parents to supplement your paper-route money and take you to the races") may be of interest to young Supercross wannabes, who will be further inspired by the countless photos of McGrath and motorcycle soaring through the air. From Booklist
Supercross, a supercharged version of motocross motorcycle racing, is a high-speed, flamboyant, and potentially very dangerous sport. It takes a special combination of talent and guts to excel, and McGrath, supercross' winningest competitor, has both. Fans of this relatively new sport and of its living legend will flock to this new autobiography (written with coauthor Palmer). It's a book that captures the public image of the sport--wild living, high octane, guts 'n' glory--while also promoting the notions of safety, common sense, and dedication. Parents of young racers will enjoy the book for its subtle message (even when it looks like fun and games, success is a lot of hard work), while younger readers will thrill to its stories of a racer's adventurous lifestyle. McGrath has had an interesting ride, from obscurity to top of the supercross ladder, and his story will be relished by anyone with an interest in this unusual sport. Big fan of McGrath and a long-time motocross guy. The book is funny and easy to read - broken down by experiences and ancedotes. At times it rambles around and the whole book is poorly edited - my elementary school English teacher just rolled over in her grave. But the book hits home as it tells the story of a legend in our sport. It also reminds me that although Supercross/Motocross has become huge, the players are all inter-mingled throughout the past 40 years. McGrath can win races but he can also spin a yarn. Book is fun to read.
Good book from, and about a motocross legend.McGrath changed the sport, and made it what is today. He named a journalist that did him wrong by leaking early information that was told in a confidential conversation. Not cool! I have since cancelled my subscription to the magazine he is affiliated with.
My son got me into motocross and talked about all these people. To read what Jeremy had to say was enjoyable and an easy read. Finished the book in two days.
Worked exactly as needed for my son's project on Jeremy McGrath. It was a little over his head though (it helped me help him though!)
The king
I grew up watching JM rise to glory from his amateur years all the way till today. This book certainly fills in the gap perfectly as to what this sport and the people around it really are. I have never in my life enjoyed a book as much as this one. Career record for me to read 297 pages in 2 days. Thanks for all the memories Jeremy.
And good read for all ages! My son loved it!
I bought this book for one of my middle school boys who is into motocross, and he couldn't put it down. His read it at least twice since.
