This is such a beautiful, charming book for little kids and their parents! Purchased this for my 5yo niece, who immediately plopped down and demanded to play/read with me. It may be that she just has more recent practice (thanks to riding in cars with her parents, I suppose), but she was way better at spotting things that began with the target letter for every state than I was. Of course, I could share stories and information about many of the sights and destinations identified in the book that I had visited, so it was fun for me, too, filling in the blanks for her. The whole experience triggered lots of conversation, and judging from a call with my brother last night the book continues to be a source of entertainment for the whole family. They are already planning trips to go see some of the places in the book!As a final note, hats off to the designer, who managed to line up a little circular window that connects every state/page to the state/page in front of and behind it. It is very clever--sort of like THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR EATS THE U.S. Highly recommended.
As a Canadian, I was excited to read I Spy the 50 States because I thought it would be a fun way to learn more about my neighbours to the south. Unfortunately, I was left pretty disappointed.Using a bald eagle as a guide, we travel through the 50 US states to learn fun things about each state. The pages themselves are charming; each state is given a two-page spread that features a collage of different items (industry, tourism, recipes, animals, etc.) that are unique to, or representative of, that particular state. Fun, right? Except that the images are somewhat stylized and not all are labelled so it's not always possible to even figure out what something is or why it's important to that state.As far as the main selling features of this book, they both fell flat for me. The "I Spy" aspect was really quite difficult at times, both because of the stylized pictures and due to the overwhelming vagueness of some items to be found. A couple of times I was even left wondering if it's possible that some of the names for things mean something entirely different in Canada -- "sleigh" and "bowl of chili", I'm lookin' at you! (Actually, I'm not, because try as I might I could not find you.)In addition, the "spy through the hole" feature was a bit disappointing. The idea is that each page has a hole in one of the images to show you something that the current state shares with the next state. Except that there was no real rhyme nor reason to how this was decided. Sometimes it was literally the exact same little picture on both pages, other times it would be something like wood slats on a covered bridge that became walls to a sugar shack (not exactly things that both states share), and every other page was simply a hole where the bald eagle was, which seemed like sort of a cop out since the book opened by telling us that the bald eagle is native to 49 of the 50 states.It appears that this book is part of a large group of books using the same illustrations to share facts about the 50 states. If those other books include actual labels or lists or descriptions of what these images are (and why they're important), then I could see how this would be a good complementary read. Otherwise, I struggle to know who to recommend this to because unless you're already familiar with the states and what they're famous for, you might not be able to figure out what the heck you're supposed to be learning.1.5 disappointed stars rounded up.Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Wide Eyed Editions for providing me with a DRC of this book.
I Spy the 50 States is a children’s picture book with a small I Spy element (three items are listed, all starting with the same letter). Each state is represented in colorful pictures, over a two-page spread. In the top left-hand corner of every state spread is an illustration that says the state name and its nickname (i.e. California, The Golden State). Within the spread are pictures that represent something unique about the state, such as a famous landmark, the state capitol, native plants or wildlife, etc.My interest is in this book comes from my love for travel. Wanderlust has taken me many different places over the years, and I hope to pass on the love for exploration onto my children. And what better way to get them excited about new places than through colorful pictures, right?Well, I have to be honest, this book fell short for me.The illustrations were colorful and wonderfully drawn. The pictures of people were diverse. Throughout the book, famous stops along the underground railroad are included, as well as native American landmarks, and various museums where people can explore our history, good and bad. And I love that. However, there was at least one depiction of what appeared to be a slave woman happily holding her harvest. I say “appeared†because this is my interpretation of the picture, but I doubt that I’m the only person who would see it as such, and I find it bothersome. So, maybe I’m the PC police, but I think the image should have been left out since there is no verbiage to define what is intended.Obviously, this is a children’s book, but it is clearly geared for younger children. Certainly it is way too young for my kiddos, though they might enjoy the pictures. However, I do think children on the older end of the intended age range would have questions (curious little minds!) about what that bird is, etc. and as the images are specific to each state, I doubt most parents would have answers to all those questions.Finally, the publisher’s summary claims that the images are meant to represent unique features of each state, but if every state has similar pictures, it’s hardly unique is it? And why is the Statue of Liberty on New Jersey’s page? Ellis Island is shared jurisdiction between New York and New Jersey, Liberty Island is not. As this is a nonfiction children’s book, I think it’s important that the facts be accurate.In a nutshell, I know it’s a children’s book and it probably appears I’m being an overly picky curmudgeon. The pictures are bright and colorful, I greatly appreciate the inclusivity, but I think the topic requires more than pictures, and this would have been better done as a series with a book per state and geared towards slightly older children.I like the idea, but feel the execution falls short. It’s a pass for me.Note: I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I pride myself on writing fair and honest reviews.
