I think that a book like this has a little something for everyone. For die hard runners, there are new ways to think about form and technique. For new runners, there are mind-sets and philosophies to really think about what is important when it comes to running.I really enjoyed Kevin's thoughtful approach to not just running, but to life. Just looking at his chapter subjects shows us how introspective this book is: beginner's mind, reasons for running, coaching as play, eating with heartfulness, well-being, breathing, posture, balance, healing, and timing. While some of the book is very technical, there are tips we can all use. Getting in touch with how and why we run, running for pleasure, putting away the music, stopping running because we have to and starting to run because we want to, looking at everything we do as play and the fundamental importance of that, breathing specifically and reflectively and so much more are all covered in the book.If you love to run or want to love to run, this is a great book for you. If you are raising children and you are not sure how to promote sport and a love of being physical, there is a lot to think of in this book. One of my favorite quotes in the book on page 45:"From the Latin, competere, 'strive in common' in classical Latin means 'to come together, agree, to be qualified, strive together;' from com 'together' to petere 'to strive and seek.' Competition's root meaning and true meaning for growth is to strive together for the attainment of something. To go forth together to understand each other's potential. True competition is striving for excellence together. In this way, competition is an opportunity for enjoying a quest to achieve personal and perhaps team potential. The best effort of another has the potential to bring out the best effort in you. There are no winners and losers. Just an attempt to raise the level of play in a way that everyone benefits from a challenging learning experience." (This quote is in relation to how we are raising children and young athletes and the picture we are painting for them)Kevin's book may not change the how or why you run, but it is guaranteed to make you think and take a new look at the beauty of being a runner. A unusual amount of snow today. I ran with my old partner-my dog. The last five years of my life have been immersed in training intensely for triathlon This summer I had a sub-performance season.. I knew I needed rest, but my spirit desired more, more answers to "why"? I read a great book on "training with a Navy Seal" and a book written by another, which, everybody should read about "resilience" Both books were enlightening but, what is right for me? I needed to reset my body, mind and spirit. Kevin's book opened the pathway.. I rediscovered why and what brought me to do the things I enjoy and love in life. I restarted to feel my body, listen to my breath and heartbeat. I looked around and it was such a glorious winter day! Great book! The book is more than just running, as you will find out. It is about finding peace and purpose in everything you do.
