An amazing series with a strong female character. An inspector in the Thames Valley Police, Hillary Greene has in impeccable record of solved cases. It hasn't been easy for her since she's had to defend herself in an investigation of her husband , a bent police officer in the department. This series sees Hillary and her team members who all have personal issues, as they work the cases and arrive at solutions. All the books are hard to put down and are highly satisfying reads.

DI Hillary Greene returns to work almost two months after Superintendent Philip ‘Mellow’ Mallow's murder at the hands of a sniper at the end of MURDER IN THE MANSION. Both she and Mel's pregnant widow, Jeanine, are determined to find the killer — will Janine go too far?Hillary meets Mel's replacement, Superintendent Brian Vane (who she has worked with before). At the same time, she and her team are assigned the Edward Philpott murder case...I followed the investigation as it unfolded looking for clues in the Philpott case. I was also interested in seeing if the person that shot Mel would be caught and made to pay for his crimes. There were several tense moments along the way. The whodunnit and why (on Mel's investigation) were mentioned in the story in advance, but the reader is left to wonder if the murderer would be caught. I did not figure out the whodunnit or why in the Philpott case until the big reveal.As I have with the other books in the series, I read this one straight through without stopping. It was a pleasant afternoon read and I recommend the DI HILLARY GREENE series to anyone who enjoys good, clean mysteries with a strong female protagonist!

DO Hillary Greene comes back from a two-month compassionate leave still morning the loss of her best friend. Crime however has not taken a break. This story keeps a brisk pace as the constabulary seeks to solve the murder of Hillary's best friend and a new crime victim found face down in his lovely garden. DI Hillary Greene has a reputation for clear thinking and intuitive focus on pinning down the relevant facts. I look forward to reading more novels featuring DI Greene. She is concise and admirable.

Another home run! I have been thoroughly enjoying the Hillary Greene series. I especially enjoyed Hillary confronting Gemma in the ladies room. Priceless. Can't wait for the next book.Nice job, Ms. Martin.

I can't. believe how Faith Martin can write one great mystery after another as she does! Can't wait to get to the next one. Wonderful, stories that read like the real thing, with all the characters feeling real. I have read and loved all 4 so far, and am eager to get right into another. These are well written and so good to read.

The astonishingly repetitive use of the word "grimly" - and variations thereof - was so distracting I almost quit reading the book about midway through but, then, I became curious as to how much more the author could possibly use it. I wondered if it was a dare. How many times could she use the word grimly (or grim or grimace)? I've not read any other books from this series so I don't know if this is just the author's signature word for the series, and it's just not my cup of grim tea. I can't speak to the merits of the book because, honestly, I was so distracted by this word that the import of the story grimly faded away. The following are just some - SOME - of the usages of grimly starting about midway through the book:“Grimly now…”“… thought grimly…”“…smiled grimly…”“…carried on grimly…”“Grimly, she jogged down the path…”“Grimly, they reminded her…”“…watched grimly…““…snapped grimly…”“…sighed grimly…”“…broke in grimly…”“…said grimly…”“Grimly, Davis relayed…”“…nodded grimly…”“…bluffed grimly…”“…all too grimly…”“Grimly she walked…”And there were variations....“…first grim tingle…”“…a disgusted grimace…”“…grim-voiced…”“…grim smile…”Another favorite word was tight and variations thereof...“…a tight look of apprehension…”“…stomach felt tight…”“…voice, tight with tension…”“…thin lips tightened…”“…lips felt tight…”“…a tight smile…”“…said tightly…”And then sometimes the twain would meet...“her face was as tight and grim as…”If you're not bothered by the repetitive use of the word grimly, this may be a fabulous book. I see very positive reviews for it, so you might want to rely more on those. But the use - and abuse - of the word grimly (can you jog grimly?) was so abundant, I just felt compelled to review. Some might say I did so grimly.

Well drawn out characters, excellent realistic dialogue, lots of plot lines, this stood well on its own even knowing other book held keys to the cases. A thoroughly good read.

I always enjoy reading about the exploits of Hillary Green. It was a very entertaining read and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
