Very informative, love the pictures in it and also the content, of course! For the price of it, it is worth it! :)
Very colorful, informative and user friendly. Have recently started collecting indoor plants and trying to develop my green thumb. Of course, Google and YouTube have endless amounts of information. That's great and all but for me that can equal overwhelming amounts of information. This book covers the main hundred or so houseplants and gives you the basic care information that you would need as well as common pests/problems. Had a spider plant die on me a couple months ago (RIP) and the book was right on about why it had happened (overwatering and mites). This has made plant care so much easier to digest and has assured me that taking care of plants isn't really THAT complicated. Lovely layout and fun to read (even about plants that I don't own - yet). Highly, highly recommend for a beginner or intermediate plant parent. Note: Size is a bit smaller than I imagined, but all the better. Less clutter and easy to keep nearby for quick reference.
Really great guide to houseplants. I am an experienced outdoor vegetable gardener, who has never had much success with houseplants. The only one I've ever been able to keep alive is, George, my un-killable Aspidistra (Iron Plant). Thanks to this book and the more detailed, but less cute, book"Practical Houseplants" I now have a little forest of air cleaning plants, succulents, retro 70's plants (rubber plant, and swiss cheese plant), and even two indoor banana trees - all healthy and happy. Even George is happier than ever, with new leaves. Thank you!
I really like the organization of the "How Not to Kill Your Houseplant: Survival Tips for the Horticulturally Challenged" by Veronica Peerless. I like how it has the plants at the beginning of the book (with pictures too!) so you can go directly to those pages. The advice is good and do-able. I like that Ms Peerless doesn't go overboard with explanations because 'overboard' leads to 'overwhelmed' for me. I feel like I can actually follow the advice. My percentage of keeping houseplants alive has been about 60% for the last year. That's up from zero percent but I would like to do better. Having plants in the house really does make the rooms feel and look better so I want to get better and I think this book will help in that goal.
Until recently, I have never really paid attention to the individual needs of my house plants. I brought them home and tried to water them regularly. Their survival was more or less luck and I did not know why some of my plants thrived and others not. Over the past year I have become more interested in taking better care of my plants. This book gives me all the information I need in a cleverly organized and easy to understand way. I love the photo-index of all featured plants at the beginning of the book. This makes looking up a specific plant I already have very easy, even if I do not know its name. It is very helpful that care instructions for plants with almost identical needs are grouped together. I also like that the book names the top 5 plants for desks, sunny spots, bathrooms, low light areas, as well as the living room. I will use this information to group my plants better in different spaces of my house and to bring new plants into my office.
HOW NOT TO KILL YOUR HOUSEPLANT (subtitle "Survival Tips for the Horticulturally Challenged") is not primarily, despite its title, a book about how to cope with a black thumb. Nor is it a "coffee-table" format book, but instead an attractive case-wrapped volume of about six by eight inches in size (15 x 20 cm) that offers nicely illustrated drawings of the most popular house plants like Maidenhead Fern, English Ivy, Jade Plant, Coleus, Christmas Ivy, and the hard-to-kill Inch Plant (often called "Wandering Jew" in the USA). Watering, soil and sunlight needs are detailed and yes, what kind of fungi, mites or insects the plants may be prone to. A very good primer; I only wish it were longer.
I needed some help, as I've moved states and what I grew successfully in one city, I've killed in another. This book is simple but I've learned a lot and so far so good. My only complaint is that when trying to decipher an issue, it always states that you could be over or under watering. Same symptoms--totally different solution. I wish it was more specific in this case, as I tend to both over and under water. Otherwise, I think it was a great purchase.
Great book for a new plant parent! Gives instructions for lighting conditions, watering, temperature and things to look out for (ie mites/insects or diseases) specific to each plant in the book. I really like how for each plant featured it tells you which plants are also similar (either related species or family of plants). That way if you cannot find the exact plant you know which are similar and require similar care. Also provides suggestions for types of plants for different parts of your home/office; a good resource for ideas if you don't know which plants you may want to get.
