Professor Armstrong makes the Medieval World come alive. She humanizes the people who lived then and tends go beyond cold facts and dates to bring a more personalized account. I will cetainly be in the market for her other works for the Great Courses.

If you want an entertaining, well organized and well paced overview of the Middle Ages- this is a good place to start. The Middle Ages was incredibly complex, with a lot of change between 400 CD and 1500 CE, with many, many people groups involved, so if you're looking for something more in depth, I would look elsewhere. That said, I really enjoyed this lecture series, and her series on the Great Mortality/Black Death. She has a knack for humanizing people who seem very different from modern folks and I really enjoyed it.

Much more than dry history, Professor Armstrong brings the Middle Ages to life. I found her documentation of pagan influences on Christian beliefs and practices to be especially interesting.

First and foremost, this is a comprehensive 18+ hour course that surveys the entirety of the Medieval era, considering everything from religious influences to bawdy jokes. Professor Armstrong is an incredible presenter here; while she may be reading from notes, the fluidity and clarity of her content is improved by its format. Her engaging delivery, capacity to slip into (brief) sections of Old English, and lucid insight into the period makes this series both entertaining and enlightening.Well worth it.

Frankly, some of her mistakes are embarrassingly bad. Time after time she inserts bad folklore and false etymology instead of doing actual research. Some great examples:- She says "upper crust" had to do with Medieval dining practices (the phrase is from the 18th or 19th century)- She says "Ring around the rosy" has to do with the Black Death (Most folklorists view this as between highly unlikely and utterly implausible)Other claims are more possible, but still unlikely:- She asserts that Christmas is just a celebration of Saturnalia (Saturnalia was celebrated in early December, three weeks before the Nativity celebrations)- She claims that "Easter" is just a celebration of Ä’astre (a Norse goddess of Spring) (true if and only if you happen to live in a Teutonic-speaking country, everywhere else it is called a variant of "Passover")- She says that Easter was celebration of a "Spring Harvest" (no such harvest could have occurred)And I won't get into some of the abridgments she makes which are dubious, at best.

If my rating were based on content alone, it would be 4-stars as the content was, for the most-part, great. The course covered much of what could be expected from and introductory medieval history course. I gave the series three-stars to emphasize the great content; unfortunately, the delivery leands itself toward a one-star rating. When I purchased the "lecture" series, I expected lectures (delivery is the key here). This was 18+ hours of Professor Armstrong READING to her audience. I can absolutely understand that, considering the amount of content that this course covers, Professor Armstrong would necessarily need to reference lecture notes; however, the entire series sounded as if it was read from a page, word-for-word (evidenced by the sometimes very strange inflections and misreads/mispronunciations, which were not edited out of the course). I've enjoyed the other "Great Courses" that I've purchased, but I will steer-clear of Professor Armstrong's lectures in the future.

Not very engaging or well organized.

Was hoping for more geopolitical pattern survey and analysis. Seems to be more anecdotal than I prefer..
