About the Author
Stephen M. Wood started Poverty Lane Orchards and Farnum Hill Ciders twenty years ago when he bought the New Hampshire orchard where he had spent summers as a boy. Today, that orchard is the largest plantation of cider apples in the United States. Before coming to cider, Wood collaborated on television documentaries, worked on a hard-rock mining crew in Colorado, and picked up a degree in History from Harvard.April White's craving for good food and great stories has taken her from the kitchens of Philadelphia to the goat farms of Tuscany, the paladares of Havana, and the tchouk huts of West Africa. A little too much about the Orchard behind the book but still a good source of information. You'll get some information on apples (that can sometimes be vague- it depends some on what you can get locally), tasting and lots of other details. Five types of cider mentioned- 1 I hadn't heard of before.I'd like more detail on making the stuff and less on "appreciating" but you do get pictures to go with the text and lists of equipment. I did appreciate the information about diagnosing/dealing with problems.Good book, you might want more detail than given here though,(might just be my opinion but I feel like there's validity to it).

Was hoping this book was going to be helpful, but it's not. Very limited information. Many pages have limited text. The information provided is general with limited specific details. If I could return - I would. Claude Jolicoeur's, The New Cider Maker's Handbook is the book to buy. I hate to say it, but save your money and pass on this one!
Author and food blogger April White, with considerable help from Farnum Hill Ciders’ Steve Wood has written a book purporting to be about how to make cider at home. The book is attractively illustrated and well designed. It covers the history and origins of cider, tasting cider, cider apples, setting up you cider room, and your first, second and third batches of cider. In addition to some information on how to make cider, the book is packed with information about Farnum Hill Ciders and about their orchard, Poverty lane Orchard. Steve Wood is one of the top cider makers anywhere and the information about him and his orchard is fascinating and well written. The section on tasting cider is very good and the background information on the history of cider is good. The first batch of cider chapter might get someone up and rolling as a home cider maker but the stuff on advanced techniques requires much more explanation to be useful to someone starting out. There are at least three books here and by trying to do too much, the book achieves too little. First, there is a book on the enjoyment and appreciation of ciders that someone who makes cider might sell at their mill to encourage people to buy and drink cider. This complements the second book on Farnum Hill Ciders and Poverty Lane Orchard. The third book, on making cider, probably more suits readers interested in the first two books than those wanting to sink their teeth into cider making. As an instruction on cider making, the novice needs a bridge from the introductory material to the more advanced techniques.

I found this book very interesting and packed full of information. Cider is nothing more than apples, fermented. It seems simple, until you taste the end result of the fermentation. Good cider, like good wine, starts with good fruit. The fermentation process brings forward the hidden aromas, tastes, and sensations of those apples. The book incudes notes, cidermaking tips, shopping lists, and very clear instructions to follow. This would make a great gift or just for yourself to try some cider making.*I was given this book for a honest review.*
