The sport of baseball is bigger than ever, with fans that span the globe. However, most fans don't really know the details and history of baseball.Now you're probably saying "So What?"Well, understanding the history, important players, and details can greatly enhance your enjoyment of the game. Saying that a player is "good" or "talented" isn't the same as saying that "They're the next Babe Ruth!" or that "They give Ty Cobb a run for his money!".If you think of yourself as a true baseball fan, then you owe it to yourself to grab this one while it's hot. It's a really fun read (unlike most other history books) and you'll really impress your friends if you bust out some awesome baseball knowledge!
I bought this book to brush up on my baseball history. I'm normally not a fan of history in general but I love baseball, so I gave it a shot. I blew right through this book because it was so interesting and engaging. The book discussed everything from the history of the baseball, bat and mitt to baseball movies and a really fun "wild facts about baseball" section. There's great content on the beginnings of the sport as well from it's earliest games and it's development into the powerhouse sport its become. The book is well rounded in that it discusses all aspects of the sport including how its influenced American culture, the role that fans play and the best players of all time. I really enjoyed this book and now feel confident about my knowledge of baseball history. Highly recommended. Thanks Ace McCloud.
I had no idea that bats were so different at the inception of the game than they are today. Baseball came about in America the early 1800s, but there are instances all over the world where games were played with a ball and something with which to bat at it all the way back to the 1400s. Early baseball players made their own bats and according to the book they could be any shape or size. It wasn't until 1859 when thickness was regulated and 1869 when they could only reach 42 inches. The book explains flat bats were not out of the ordinary and then goes on to explain what they were made of and popular bats like the Louisville slugger. It also gave me some unknown facts about the baseball and gloves, including they made their own and the were different sizes. Baseballs were softer and had different cores including rubber, cork, wool and finally a ground rubber and cork pill. Gloves were necessary because of a softer ball, but once they became harder players wore leather strips on their hands and it was noticed that a glove with webbed hand would catch balls easier. The field didn't look like it does today either. Sometimes there were only 2 bases and no diamond. That was due to the genius of Alexander Cartwright founder of the New York Knickerbockers who developed that diamond field in 1845. There is a whole history of plays from the past that have come forwards into the present in this book.The book gives you some interesting and conversational facts about baseball including where some of the nicknames for the players came from, baseball terms like sliding into base, food traditionally sold at games and why, funny and interesting superstitions of both players and fans, player taboos, seventh inning stretch, having the first pitch thrown by a celebrity, singing of the National Anthem and more. Do you know which player set a record for perfect attendance or how may stitches are in a baseball? Do you know who threw the fast pitch or the military equipment patterned after baseball equipment? You will find out in this book. The book also relates interesting baseball stories and presents popular baseball movies and the year they were released and there are a lot of them from Thomas Edison's 1898 the Ball Game to the Million Dollar Arm in 2014.This is a great book for any baseball enthusiast or for someone who wants to learn about baseball.
As a baseball fan I enjoyed this book on the history of the game. It includes some interesting trivia to share with friends. One correction, Jimmy Pearsall did not run the bases in the wrong direction, he ran facing backwards, for which he was released by Casey Stengel sortly afterwards.
Baseball has a rich history. McCloud explains the most compelling stories to inspire baseball players. It's full of tons of true stories to show the greatest moments in the sport. This is a great read for anyone interested in baseball!
Expensive and paper thin. Not worth it
This book is full of incorrect information. It's like the author printed it on his home printer and stapled it together. 49 pages that appear to be nothing more than a school research paper. So disappointed. I'm ashamed to even present this to my baseball fanatic husband.
A nice Baseball book, good for most fans. For those who have a wife that doesn't have a clue, this ebook will be a good gift for her.
