This is kind of the first literary adaptation of any Star Wars movie. This particular edition is from 1978, so for 1978 standards, it is quite the formidable piece of merchandising. Prose is simple and some of the details are sorta wrong, but it's cool to see some images from the famous deleted scenes in print form. Until the release of the Blu-ray a couple of years ago, and obviously, during the 70s and 80s and 90s, it was one of the only official pieces of merchandising with images from those scenes!In any case, the book is cool for nostalgic purposes, and can be a pretty interesting read, but nowadays, it might feel a little too old-fashioned. For die-hard fans only.
Back in 1979, when I was eight years old and Star Wars was my life, I used to read this book repeatedly. I treasured it for years, but somewhere along the road it was lost and I completely forgot about it. Now, 33 years later, I have a child of my own and have been slowly introducing him to Star Wars. He's only 3 1/2 but he loved the first film so I decided to seek out this book again and see if it would interest him. It's perhaps a little over his head, but he's surprisingly interested when I read him a few pages of it at night. It's obviously geared for children a bit older, but he follows the story no problem.At any rate, it's been fun for me to revisit it after all these years. There are even a few treats for Star Wars geeks like me, like the brief conversation (and accompanying photo) between Luke and Biggs on Tatooine.
I was expecting more of a summarized version of the movie but this is like a full novel! Still, the book is filled with actual pictures from the movie so my daughter still loves to pull it out and look at the pictures even though I tell her the stories are too long to read before bed (she does not like the idea of one page at a time).
Perfect for my son who is too young and scared to watch the movie. Photos are great and numerous, plot is exactly the film. He can sound knowlegeable when playing with his friends, but doesn't have nightmares. Book was in good condition as advertised.
We purchased this for the second generation of Star Wars lovers. My son wore his book out and I hope this one gets as much love from my grandsons.
Bought this for my 7-year-old and he loves it!
Great nostalgic book for me. My 3 and 6 year old boys have also enjoyed it!
