I wouldn't get Poker for Dummies again, as there are so many better poker books out there. The book is over 16 years old, so many of the poker website recommendations are out of date. Another issue--The hand recommendations in the Texas Hold'em section are far too loose, among other things.If you're looking for a more useful poker book, just click on my reviews--I've got about 5-6 poker books I would recommend over this one. The Texas Hold'em Dummies book is much better.Side note: the coauthor Lou Kriger has an excellent poker site Pokerology.com, where he goes into very specific detail on how to play winning poker.
"Poker for Dummies" is a reference primer that merits reading for the rube, but it's marred by embarrassing mistakes (their sample deal of Omaha/8 shows three cards of the same rank and suit), and some half-baked stratagems: would you play against someone who carried a game notepad, as they recommend?Still, "Dummies" deconstructs money management myths, gives good advice re. when and why to keep or dump, and explains why calling is often worth the investment. Their take on bluffing was enlightening too, but watch it when playing your Wednesday night chums, a.k.a. people who don't know when they're beat. It's a decent entryway with some good nuggets, but I'll refine them elsewhere.
Bought this as a gag gift for a poker buddy, but flipped through it first. Sound information for a novice, but sometimes it goes a bit too far. The advice on how to spot "tells" isn't going to help anyone, for example.
Did not cover enough games and what it covered it covered in too much depth for a starters guide. Also, I ordered the book new and it came used, all underline and note all over the page. Big disappointment!
Great book for beginner's. It's a fun read and easy to follow if you wanna learn how to play Stud poker, Texas hold'em and video poker I recommend this book.
