One open page of info to show how the pages are set up. (What I wanted to see before buying it.)Rock info is very short, see picture. Thought it would be mainly rock ID info. Mostly general rock info.For the price it is a nice little book.
I used this book to share basic facts about common gems and minerals with second grade students. The basic facts were there and the text was not heavy with scientific terms unfamiliar to younger students. It is also larger than usual "pocket" guides, as well as hardcover, so it was more practical. The illustrations were colorful and it had an index. I plan to order several more so I am not sharing just this one book with so many students.
My step-son loved this book and spend a half an hour looking at it on Hanukkah even though he had other gifts to unwrap. I look forward to exploring more mineral collecting with him in the future, with this book as a guide. This covers all of the basic an explains thing in a complete and thoughtful, yet simple manner. Images are clean and helpful references for find and matching your natural treasures.I love the size, small enough to stick in a backback for an adventure day, yet just large enough you are not straining your eyes trying to decipher what you are looking at. While geared at the younger set, I think this is good for a variety of ages.
Bought this for my grandson's 10th birthday, as he loves rocks. It has all the basics of rock formations that he may not be ready for, but it will be there when he is. Thanks for the opportunity to share this with him!
I bought two copies of this: one for my 6-year-old and one for his 7-year-old "gem" hunting friend. The book is a good compromise between the comprehensive guides for adult rockhounds and the National Geographic Kids book that is a bit too simple for my son's level of interest.
Not Enough Information. Though this is a great pocket guide where pictures and ebook functionality are concerned, the mineral information is scant: it lists no chemical formulae for the the minerals. It also orders no deals within categories in a way that seems arbitrary, though it covers the categories fairly well. There are not nearly enough minerals, but it's a good start. Overall, I'd definitely recommend it for beginners (like me) and for quick reference. The most disappointing g thing about this guide is that it is not searchable by mineral keyword. That word have been useful, so would the typical abilities to bookmark, highlight and make notes.
We have a 7 year old grandson who is a rock hound and this book is a favorite of his. Though he can read only some of it, the pictures are quality and good sized. He loves that it is pocket size.
I bought this for my son who collects rocks/crystals etc. According to him, this is a good book
