The book is written almost like a federal regulation. Found other books that offered better information on power boat handling which is what I was searching for.
I'm thinking about the purchase of a 35-40 foot Diesel live aboard. I'm reading books to educate myself before starting to seriously looking for a Trawler.I highly recommend this book in a paper addition to allow you to enter notes on the text.
I found this to be a very informative publication on boating. Even if you are coming in with very minimal knowledge, it will teach you many of the basics. With boating, as with many other things, there is no substitute for experience out on the water, but this is a solid way to learn some fundamentals before hitting the water. You might even avoid bad habits from the very beginning by reading this book first. Definitely recommend.
Great Book.One annoyance (hence only 4 stars): The purported boat trailer-towing laws listed by state is not accurate. It purports to provide a chart of the weight limits for towing a boat trailer without the requirement of trailer brakes. However, the chart was taken from an RV company that was providing the weight limits for RV's. For example, the chart gave a 1,500 lb weight limit in California before trailer brakes are mandatory. That is not the law in California for trailering a boat! For trailering a boat, the weight limit is 3,000 lbs. The 1,500 lbs. limit is for coach and camp trailers in California. Boat trailer weight limits for brakes are covered by a different section of the law. The publisher should provide a chart that is specific to trailering boats!
This is a fantastic educational/resource book! I am using it for my son's high school elective course because he loves boating. Worth the money. Well written and very informative.

For those of you looking to purchase a boat get this book now. It gives you many tips that will assist you in your purchase. It will also assist you in trailer questions and equipment needed on your boat.
I have used this book to teach classes for safe boating since this edition came out. It addresses everything the boater should know about boats and boating.
The current up to date Edition for the US Coast Guard Boating Safety and Seamanship. If your going to take BS & S, you need this book and this edition. A MUST HAVE. I would keep this on my boat at all times for review. You never know when you may need a quick review or have an emergency. What if your VHF Radio is not working and you can't call for help on Channel 16 ?
