About the Author
Don and Petie Kladstrup are former journalists who have written extensively about wine and France for numerous publications. Don, a winner of three Emmys and numerous other awards, was a foreign correspondent for ABC and CBS television news. Petie, an Overseas Press Club winner, was a newspaper journalist and more recently protocol officer for the U.S. ambassador to UNESCO. The Kladstrups divide their time between Paris and Normandy.

The history of Champagne presents a story here of a people steeped in their traditions and a singular devotion to their craft. Champagne, perfectly described here by the author, is emblematic of its terroir and also is the name of the wine. Le Champagne is the terroir and La Champagne is the wine. This dichotomy is unique in the world of wine. It's fitting that champagne is wedded so intimately to its terroir. This story describes the struggle, conflicts from multiple wars and all of the uncertainties of the weather. Several years ago I toured the Champagne region. We stopped in Epernay on the tour. We were treated to a tour of one of the renowned producers (Mercier). This well-written book only added to my appreciation of the region and of the and the greatness of the historic story of champagne. This book is a fun read, well researched and documented by the author. Any reader, wine connoisseur or not, can enjoy this well-told story. For myself, I am filled with the desire to return to Champagne for another visit.
What we (wife and I) love about this book is the intermingling of the wine of Champagne and the history of the Champagne region. You will get a fine appreciation of both and decent French history to boot. We are 1/2 done with this book and will never drink (or visit) Champagne the same again. In my mind, if you were to read this book you would be able to "talk" Champagne with all but the very most knowledgeable. That being said, it is simply a fascinating read. And it is a must read to Champagne lovers. Bravo!
The narrative is always fascinating, and the story extremely well paced - the story, told over the years, of how this wine began, gained popularity, and achieved international success. There are more detailed histories out there, but I doubt you'll find one that's more appealing.
Really enjoyable and informative. Provided insight and new details about the region, wine, and politics of Champagne. Especially liked the information on many of the well known champagne houses and their roles during the wars. My wife is now reading it -- and we bought 2 champagnes we haven't had before for part of our Christmas gift this year.
Fantastic history of the history of champagne and it's place in time and history, complete with imbibers, bootleggers, kings and queens who sipped and shipped and smuggled and warred. Fun read, well written, great photos. Best read with champagne flute in hand.

As with their previous books on how history and the horrific wars have taken their toll on France and its prized wine commodities, the Kladstrup's "Champagne" further educates us on the struggles of the champagnois vintners as champagne itself evolved, and ultimately the toil of the land area that was the center of WWI battles. Having visited the area to enjoy and for historical discovery, I wished I had read it sooner!Highly recommend this book!!
I love this book so much, so many little stories affecting one small area that produces my favorite drink in the world. The book is written so well, the time line is perfect and I finished the entire book in three days.A MUST for any champagne lover, perfect for anyone about to visit the region.
