I thought this book was an okay read. I guess I expected more after reading the first in the series. I just loved the first book and I thought all the main and secondary characters in it were engaging. This second book was just sorta an average read all the way through til the hero has an epic failure of character in the last 20% that in turn sends the female character to act and break the heart of the hero's son. While the author doesn't go out of her way to detail all the trauma this boy felt by the heroine's departure in can be inferred since his birth mother abondoned him as well so this poor boy must have been traumatized by this second abandonment of someone whom he loved and who claimed to love him. Ugh- My heart broke for this little boy and the goodwill I felt for the heroine eroded to almost nothing at this point. How could any good person just up and leave a little boy with no word. If the author wants her readers to believe his birth mother is a monster because she abandoned him, why would her readers be any less critical of the heroine's towards this beautiful boy. And the two main characters don't see or talk for six months but they can both just sorta dismiss each others' epic failure of character and the build up of half of year of resentment on both sides in a few minutes once they see each other. Utterly unbelievable from my viewpoint. So it was just an average read that at the end sorta goes off the rails anyway. My opinion- if you are pressed for time or money, just read the first. The only thing good about this one was the catching up on the family members from the first book.
***5 Stars***That cover was the bait. I mean who can deny that a cover with a half nekkid man and cute puppy doesn’t make them all kinds of melty? And then the synopsis was the hook because I do love me a single dad romance and this one had it all. It was funny, sweet, swoon worthy, adorable, smexy and just enough drama to keep me turning the pages to find out what would happen next and want more when everything was said and done.I loved Milly and Hudson. Milly is sweet, strong, a little quirky and despite going through something that would shatter anyone, she’s found a way to pick herself up and move forward. And though she has walls surrounding her heart, she hasn’t turned cynical. Hudson is a good man and a great father. His love for Wiley, his son, made me all kinds of melty. He has his faults, which tend to give him ‘insert foot in mouth’ disease, but outside of that, it was hard not to love the man.Milly and Hudson’s journey was a fun one, despite the demons that plague them. Outside of a few awkward moments, I loved how their relationship evolved as the book progressed. It felt organic as they kept colliding for one reason or another. Dick and Wiley definitely pushed things along with their antics (which were adorable and had me chuckling throughout the story) but they only helped to get the two adults into each other’s orbits and find that there was more than just a physical attraction between them. And as for that huge roadblock in their journey, it was HUGE and heartbreaking. I flip flopped on whose team I was on, and I did fall on one side more than the other, but in the end I loved how it all got resolved and where Milly and Hudson ended up.I really enjoyed this read, and outside of a few little issues, some heartbreaking moments and that huge roadblock, it was a sweet, fun and adorable read and I will readily admit that Wiley and Dick factored heavily in my rating of the story because they played such huge roles in everything that happened. But outside of those two, I loved both of their families and wouldn’t mind being adopted by either. Catching up with Gray and Marin and their brood was a lot of fun and as for Pearson...well, after that ending, I kinda need his book like...oh...yesterday?? But since that’s impossible I will be keeping an eye out for when it drops!~ Copy provided by Give Me Books Promo & voluntarily reviewed ~
Milly is in New York starting over after her divorce. She wasn’t looking for love after her ex-husband left her with nothing but Dick. However, when she manages to run into a gorgeous man with ice blue eyes who just so happens to live in her apartment building she is smitten.Hudson isn’t looking for a relationship, after his ex-wife abandoned him and his son, Wiley, he doesn’t want to put his son through that type of loss again. But there is something about the new women in his apartment complex that catches his eye. Will these two people who have been hurt in the past be able to overcome their fears and their losses and find love in each other?Milly has been through a lot of heartbreak and loss in the past two years of her life and starting over is truly the best thing for her. My heart broke for her after reading everything she has been through. I truly wanted everything good to happen to her because she deserved it all. Hudson, we first met in From Ashes to Flames, he’s a veterinarian and an amazing father to his son, Wiley. He does everything for his son and is a great father.Wiley and his love for Milly’s big, pretty butt stole the story for me. Wiley is just like any 5-year-old and his love for dogs, especially his attachment to Dick was great. Plus, some of the things that boy said had me cracking up. How could anyone abandon this adorable kid? I mean seriously, he is so adorable! This story continued my love of the West brothers and I can’t wait to read Pearson’s story, especially after the ending of this one!
