I bought this book at the beginning of our school year for two of my boys. They are eight and 10 and were having a difficult time sitting still for spelling and were kind of lost with their regular spelling books.This book has really helped them understand spelling because it helps them see that most big words are little words, prefixes and/or suffixes strung together.I didn't want to use the cutout letters in the back of the book. I have a stash of Scrabble letters. So, I used them and picked out all the letters particular for that lesson.That's how this book works. All the words from each lesson can be spelled with the letters from the longest word. So those letters are given to the student. The student then forms the words as each word is read.Then I decided to add to and change things for my boys. I started having them write the words from each lesson and stopped giving them the letter tiles. It was getting too easy to guess the correct spelling because they use the small amount of letters to spell all the words from each lesson.I had them write the misspelled words and use them in their writing. They don't misspell too many words any longer.This book has helped my boys and they like it (or at least they don't mind doing spelling now)
This book provides a great spelling activity for my whole class. It is a great way to make manipulative materials out of something that is otherwise conceptual. We do a different word each week which allows me to choose what spelling patterns to sort for, and I can match it up with my weekly spelling list. I have made it competitive and teams work together to make the most words with the most letters. Then they have to multiply the number of words they get by the number of letters in those words (i.e., 12 words x 4 letters in those words = 48 points) then they add to get their final score. It is a great way to review multiplication of 2-digits by 1-digit while finalizing a spelling activity. Great book!
I like these books. It is a time saver to have word lists ready made. I use my own letter tiles. I pick and choose according to what sorts of words I'm working on with a particular student. Sometimes I need to adapt a list a bit. I own four of the books in this series so can almost always find a lesson that will work. My kiddos always like trying to figure out the last word that uses all the letters.
Great for my weekly find as many words as possible. The kids love when I put the letters up on Monday and give prizes to whomever finds the most words. Great resource!
Students love making words! I have the activities prepped in advance and students just go to where it is. I also use it in conjunction with Magnetic Teaching Tiles and let students make the words on the metal air handling unit in the room (could also use cookie sheets).
The lessons take a little longer than is suggested but they do make the suggestion they can be done over two days. As I walk around I can really see at a glance the students who struggle. All my students enjoy doing this and everyone is engaged.
Doesn't follow a real sequence or explicitly teach any skills. More of a source of activities than actual lessons.
